Crosses on buns

The Hot Cross Bun recipe ( shows a picture of saidd buns with nice white crosses on.

The text says 'make a deep cross on each one with a sharp knife' and then they are left to rise and bake. After that 'melt the sugar and 2 tablespoons of water for the glaze over a gentle heat and brush the buns with it as soon as they come out of the oven, to make them nice and sticky'.

So what about the white crosses?

It’s because the published Cookery Course version of the recipe had a note at the bottom of the recipe about crosses. I will ask for it to be added.
