Dear Lindsey
I live part time in Angola and have been unable to find strong bread flour. I would love to make hot cross buns beginning the dough in my bread maker as I have a shoulder problem and am unable to knead properly. Is it possible to use just plain or self raising flour to do this? Do you have any suggestions or advice please?

Thank you

For Maryyem

Hello Maryyem

As you have no choice I would opt for the plain flour. They may not rise as much and the texture will be different but I’m sure they will taste good.

Here is a breadmaker version, which I would make with 4 teaspoons of easy-bake yeast. Also I like them spicy so I use 3 teaspoons of the mixed spice and 1 of cinnamon.

If you glaze them while they are hot from the oven it will help soften the crusty tops.

Best wishes
