refreezing cooked meat dishes

Hi, I hope you can clarify something that I get different answer to whenever I ask this question.

I buy fresh meat and freeze it raw. Then thaw and make a dish eg casserole. Can I freeze this cooked dish safely?

Yes it is perfectly safe to defrost raw meat then cook it thoroughly and freeze it when cooled.

Frozen meat

Hello Dotty, the only reason that I know of not to refreeze thawed meat is that the texture of the meat can be changed. It will not do you any harm from a health point of view.

re-freezing meat

Within catering the guidelines are very strict and well controlled but for anyone who wants advice domestically the NHS have guidelines on food safety.

This advice given by the NHS on re-freezing raw meat…..

‘Never re-freeze raw meat (including poultry) or fish that has been defrosted. It is possible to re-freeze cooked meat once, as long as it has been cooled before going into the freezer. But if in doubt, don't re-freeze.’
