Olive oil

Hi Lindsey

Recipes for dressings and sauces often say 'use a good quality extra virgin olive oil' the next sentence is usually 'the best you can afford' is this still true?

Olive oil from the supermarket does'nt really taste of anything and is kind of greasy but olive oil I've eaten in Tuscany or even California is delicious, fruity and fresh.

Could you suggest a quality extra virgin olive oil please or point me in the right direction. Thank you

Olive Oil

Hello Maggie,

Olive oil is a bit like wine. I have attended a few olive oil tastings and they vary enormously. If I buy an olive oil and I like the taste of it I save it for dressings and if it doesn’t taste so good I use it up in flavour strong recipes like Ragu Bolognese or Roast Chicken with Red Onion, Thyme and Garlic.

I have a couple bottles in my cupboard at the moment. Waitrose own Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Fillippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil and I like the taste of both of them.

I have had some of the wonderful fresh olive oil from Mothers Garden, which has been featured here on the site.

Best wishes
