cracked top fruit cake

I am entering a local show and baking a rubbed in fruit cake to their receipe. I tried it out and the top of the cake was cracked. Is this acceptable or should it be perfectly smooth?

Hello Twinnie,

I think they will be looking for a smooth top.

Cracked top fruit cake

A lightly buttered butter wrapper or greaseproof paper placed loosely on top of the cake before it's baked might eleviate that problem.

Twinnie, are you using a fan assisted oven? If so, I presume you've reduced the temperature on the over by 20%? I agree with Welshcookie that fruit cakes are best done on a low temperature for a bit longer.
