date and walnut loaf

Hi lindsey,
Can you help me to find the recipe for
Delia's spicy date and walnut loaf.
I first saw it in her original book of cakes and would love to bake it again!

Spiced date & walnut loaf

I've got the recipe in an old Delia's Book of Cakes.

I can't post it yet as I've got a couple of grandchildren staying and no time to do it. I will post it next week when they have one home if that's any help. Maybe Lindsey will be able to do it before then.

Date and Walnut Loaf

Hello Katie,

I’m away at the moment but I’m fairly sure this recipe on the site is a variation of the recipe you are looking for.

http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/cuisine/european/english/quick-apricot-apple-and-pecan-loaf-cake.html

Just omit the apple and swap the apricots for dates and the pecans for walnuts. (I think the original recipe may have had just 110g of nuts and this later version was increased to 175g).

It will probably cook in about an hour without the apples.

Best wishes

Spiced date & walnut loaf

Hi

This is the recipe from Delia's Book of Cakes from the 70/80's.

4oz/110g Margarine
6oz/17g Golden syrup
2oz/50g Black treacle
1/4pt/150ml Milk
2 Large eggs
8oz/225g Plain flour
1 Teaspoon mixed spice
2 Teaspoons ground ginger
1 Level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
4oz/110g Stoned dates
2oz/50g Walnuts

Pre-heat oven to Gas 2/150C

A 2lb/900g loaf tin, well-greased

Prepare dates and walnuts. The nuts should be chopped fairly small and if the dates are in a solid block, separated out then chopped into small pieces.

Place the margarine, treacle and syrup in large saucepan and melt them together over gentle heat. Remove mixture from the heat, let it cool for a few minutes then mix the milk into it. Now beat the eggs and add to the syrup mixture as well. Sift flour, spices and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and gradually whisk the syrup mixture into the dry ingredients bit by bit until you have a smooth batter. Then lightly fold in the walnuts and about two-thirds of the dates and pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Now lightly drop the rest of the dates on the top pushing them gently in with a skewer. Place the cake on the centre shelf and bake for 1.5 hours to 1 hour 50 minutes by which time it will have a very rounded, slightly cracked top. Cool in tin for about 30 minutes before turning out.
