Grape Nuts Cereal? (key lime pie)

Haven't a clue what galangal is, or need to know what to use if you can't buy creme fraiche locally? We're sure our knowledgeable members will be able to point you in the right direction...

Grape Nuts Cereal? (key lime pie)

Hello,

I'd like to cook Delia's recipe for Key Lime Pie, but I'm a bit confused as to what constitutes the following ingredient:

2 oz (50 g) Grape-Nuts breakfast cereal

There are loads of types of cereals at my local Tesco's but I can't seem to find an explicitly Grape nut oriented one - unless I've missed something that doesn't list grape nut content on its cover. Can anyone suggest an alternative that would work?

Ta, Sarah.

Grape Nuts

'Grape Nuts' is a brand name (like 'Ricicles' or 'Frosties') rather than an ingredient. You can buy them from Steenbergs through Amazon. Hope that helps!

Grape nuts

Why anybody would want to use Grape Nuts in a Key Lime Pie is beyond me. Delia recipe or not!

grape nuts

I bought a packet from Waitrose on Thursday. Beware if you are eating them as a breakfast cereal they can be quite hard, watch your teeth! Why they are required for a Key Lime Pie, I don't know! i use normal digestives.

grape nuts

We always have them sprinkled on muesli, they add crunch and taste nice too.

Hmmm...

My teeth aren't too healthy (years of soft drink abuse), also I'd like to make the pie soon and don't fancy sourcing the grape nut thing, so I wonder if I can use all digestive biscuits instead?

The crust recipe is butter, 6oz digestives, (crushed) and 2 oz of grape nuts, (crushed).

What would you people do? Just use 8oz of Digestives?

I know that's the obvious solution, but I'd like some reassurance or alternative ideas, please.

Thanks again.

Just repeating Tubs reply (3posts above) as I think it answers your question!

Grape Nuts.

Apparently its a Kellogs product.

I asked this years ago on here and everyone seem to know about it apart from me. I've still never actually seen it in a shop anywhere!!!!!!!!!!

You're just too young, James!

Grape nuts

They're in a very small box in the cereal section. Easy to miss, but stocked most places. Even the village shop has them!

It's an American product, so like Graham crackers not as well known in the UK.

Ocado stock them James, if you ever feel a burning desire to try them. I love them as they don't go soggy, but I would recommend leaving them to soak for a couple of minutes if you value your teeth.

Yep

Thanks everyone. I found the Grape Nuts. The packaging is about half the size of the normal sized breakfast cereals - so you do have to have a good scout round the ailes.

It's amazing what you an find when you actually open your eyes!

I probably will use some grape nuts in the crust - because I'm guessing digestives won't be crunchy enough. I've also noticed that other recipes for Key Lime Pie advocate refridgerating the crust for an hour or so - before it goes in the oven.

Only Delia's recipe doesn't mention this stage. Hmmm....Will definitely try the recipe and post how it goes though!

Grape Nuts!

I've been looking, just out of interest. I HAVE been looking.

Nothing, Ziltch!

But then here, the shops are all "local" and "express" style instead of full size shops.

Only big shop here is Waitrose, and nothing in there but again, whilst its not the smallest Waitrose, its certainly not the biggest.

I found a pic online though!!!

Grape Nuts.

Now, Sainsburys do have them on their web site, but not in the same packaging I found on line.

This is a different make in a white box, but same name?!?! The box I found on line is Kellogs in a purple box.

Like I said though, not in my local one, but then they only have two shelves of cereal in total in the first place!

My old flat was bigger than my local Sainsburys here!!!!!! Ha ha ha!!!

In the oven? Does classic Key Lime pie go in the oven?
