Which month to start

I've stopped making both these now, but when I did I used to get the cake done by the end of September - that way there's enough weeks before Christmas to get plenty of brandy into it!

Can't help you on the barley wine substitute unfortunately. Have you tried local pubs? They are often helpful when you need small quantities of alcohols you don't usually keep.

Barley wine

Barley wine is not essential. You can use Guinness, any other beer, cider, fruit juice, milk. Take your pick.

Christmas cakes/puds

i usually make mine a couple of weeks after the schools back after summer holidays - so any time from now really.

Barely wine can be found in larger supermarkets in the cider section usually top shelf, my big tesco only seems to sell it november/december time though.

but like the previous poster says - don;t use it. I make delias recipes for my puds and cakes - and follow to the letter - except, i add up all the liquid measurements and substitute in entirity for rum (dark) - which equates to one of those bottle that looks like a large hip flask think its a 35cl bottle.

Neither can I. You're all mad!!! It's not even officially autumn yet :)

I refuse to begin to think about it until after bonfire night.
