Coffee Essence Substitute

I am making your little Sticky Toffee Puddings, have run out of coffee essence and cannot get hold of any. Can you suggest a substitute for the essence in this recipe?

Coffee essence

I always keep a jar of Percol instant espresso in the cupboard. Can make it to various strengths depending upon what I want it for, eg I'll use 1 tblsp coffee to 3 tblsps hot (not quite boiling) water or 3 tblspns coffee to 1 tblsp hot water - really depends on your own preference - experiment for your own intensity preference. I have to admit, I've never tried drinking it as coffee but it's a great "essence" standby.

A non-cooks comment

My husband was reading this thread over my shoulder. He is (finally) learning to cook and is amazed that things he always thought came from a jar or a plastic tub can be made from scratch - ie cheese sauce - basically bechemal with grated cheese added. He has also recently learned what a roux is to make the bechemal (although he's seen me do it for years.) We forget that people who don't cook don't automatically know what we know, so even if we seasoned cooks think that a question is basic knowledge, it isn't for everyone and aren't we trying to encourage new cooks, not put them off? Not getting at anyone, just trying to remind us all that we're not born knowing how to cook and as we gain more knowledge and experience, we forget that others are totally inexperienced so what seems obvious to us isn't to them.

coffee essence

"we forget that others are totally inexperienced so what seems obvious to us isn't to them. " Well said, Liz.
VanessaK, I think your strong coffee for the essence has to have sugar added to it with the little hot water.

Camp

Sorry, didn't mean to sound sharp; it's just that I'm nearing 70 and Camp Coffee has been around all my life - so I just expect everyone to know about it (silly I know)

Sugar isn't necessary with instant coffee (or with strong fresh coffee). You don't really use enough for it to affect the sweetness or sugar balance.

Most recipes tell you that you can use either essence or instant. I never use the little bottles of essence found with on the baking shelf as actual coffee gives a better flavour. I have used Camp Coffee as a substitute in the past but it has (or used to have) chicory in it which makes it bitter
