Sloes revisited

Haven't a clue what galangal is, or need to know what to use if you can't buy creme fraiche locally? We're sure our knowledgeable members will be able to point you in the right direction...

Sloes revisited

It's too late in the year now but sometime ago someone posted a question about what to do with sloes besides making sloe gin.

In a book called "Best Kept Secrets of the Women's Institute - Jams, Pickles & Chutneys" (Published by Simon & Schuster UK) there is a recipe for blackberry and sloe jelly. The book was published in 2002 so probably still in print so I can't include the actual recipe but the proportions of fruit by weight were one of sloes to four of blackberries.

I would imagine it's much the same as any other jelly, boil with some water until mushy, I think sloes take a while, drain through a jelly bag, test for pectin and then a pound of sugar to a pint of juice, boil until setting point reached, Should be delicious. I did try Rowan Jelly once, but it was very bitter.

Sloes and rowanberries

Yes, Jane that was it for the jelly.

As for rowan jelly, my grandmother's recipe includes apples which seem to smooth down the bitterness of the rowan berries. I go for half and half which is a bit more apple than the recipe says but I prefer it.

The secret with both of these is to make sure you remove all the twiggy bits, so you're working with pure berries - and also to only pick them after the first frosts. The frosts really make a difference - and both are still in season, being the latest of the berries to ripen.
