Can anyone enllighten me as to what sort of thing this is, and what I could use as a substitute (if anything) in the UK? I wanted to have a go at making Amy Sedaris' (sister of writer David) cheese balls and it calls for this. It requires smoked gouda too, but I think I can improvise on that front, or smoke some...

Is very much like HP sauce but not as tangy. HP Fruity sauce is the closest you'll get to the taste of A1.
HP do a fantastic steak sauce.
It's very acidic. Makes me cough. If you are in the UK you can buy it from Amazon.
