Dried Prawns (shrimps)

Haven't a clue what galangal is, or need to know what to use if you can't buy creme fraiche locally? We're sure our knowledgeable members will be able to point you in the right direction...

Dried Prawns (shrimps)

The Chinese supermarket in Gerrard St. London no longer sells these. Can anyone recommend a good reliable source. I need about 1000g for my Burmese Balachaung recepie.

Many thanks, Moray

Dried prawns.

Have they really stopped selling them or just sold out? Its a very odd thing to discontinue as its such a store cupboard ingredient in Chinese food.

Not helpful, but the two Chinese food shops here in Brighton sell them, in several brands and pack sizes too.

Wing Yip, the big chain of Chinese supermarkets do on line ordering and delivery. Try them.

Dried prawn shortage!

I've just Googled these, and found 2 suppliers - both of which are out of stock! I'm wondering if there's a sudden shortage of dried prawns in the UK - maybe it's something similar to the scarcity of Bombay Duck (I bought the last 400g available in the country, I think!)? The Bombay Duck shortage is down to there not being many EU accredited suppliers in India - which are needed because the fish are dried on the beach and therefore there can be hygiene issues (apparently).

Dried shrimp source - in stock!

The Win Yip store that James mentioned have these in stock right now :) £2.89 for 100g. Not allowed to post the link, but Google 'winyipstore' and then search for 'dried shrimp' once you find the site :)

Spelling correction

Oh, to be able to edit a post! I did of course mean 'wingyipstore' :)
