Come on, let's be having you...This is where you can exchange food, recipe and cooking advice and questions - or just tell the rest of us what you're having for dinner tonight!
Do you buy tin beans or dried.I have always bought tin as to lazy & usually forget to soak over night. If cooking dried, how long would they keep in the fridge.
Like you Sue, I usually buy tinned and don't have a problem with that. I do wonder though whether anyone finds that fresh actually taste better?Lind
I always buy them dried. They yield approximately 3X the weight when cooked. Not sure how long in fridge but they freeze perfectly. I use them for Boston Bakes Beans, casseroles and soups.
Hi. I usually use dried as they take up less space in the store room. Gerry's BBB's are gorgeous and I've sent you the recipe Sue; hope you don't mind Gerry. I have found that the lentilles vertes (sp) we can readily buy here are a good substitute for Puy lentils, and are much cheaper and are often to be found on a special offer. I've even found a good supplier of red lentils at Auchan (Poitiers, the closest one to the airport - it's huge) and they are usually to be found in the Israeli section (yes, I was surprised to find an Israeli section as opposed to the more usual International section) and after visiting my friends near Cognac am wondering if this is a Charente thing. Still learning something new most days :0)))
"Sue; hope you don't mind Gerry."Delighted, Biggles. Just started a new one today.Good tip about the lentils, for those who can get them.
Don't like them, too sweet, too many moles-asses.
Your'e not going to put me off them John, the beans that is :0)Do try Gerry's recipe, on her site from her profile. So easy and delish:0)Speaking of moles, we discovered we didn't have any foundations in the area being demolished. How? We had a made a small hole in a wall to try and discover if there was any buried gold, no. A year later, last week, the next time we unlocked the staircase area which was totally enclosed, apart from the small hole; there was a mole. We still have plenty in the garden!!
Hi Bigs, I find BBB too sweet because of the amount of molasses, I make baked beans and use molasses but a much less quantity than BBB recipe. If you want to get rid of the moles in your garden put used cat litter down the holes or pour castor oil down the holes, I have heard of another method using Juicy Fruit chewing gum but is said to be cruel because the foil is left on and its really the foil that kills them, the other two methods don't kill them, they just bugger off over to your neighbours lawn
I mainy use dried. Works out far cheaper, but I do admit to having a couple of tins in the cupboard, just for when plans change and I need some quicker than normal.I don't think they keep well in the fridge, you really need to soak them to order in my view, however, as Gerry says, they do freeze ever so well so it might be worth doing a bit batch and freezing in useable quantities if you have the space.XXX
Hi Biggs thanks for the recipe(thanks gerry), off to the shops today and will stock up on dried beans. Never thought about cooking and then freezing. Last night the kids ate half a tin of red kidney beans before i could add them to the chilli.
Could be worse Sue, at least they were not demolishing crisps or something before their dinner. Now, get yourself a nice avatar!!!XXX
Thanks for the help,Just bought six bags of different beans. Kids have put the Red & White beans to soak and the chick peas. Will freeze once cooked and will test a dish of each in the fridge to see how long they keep.James i am a mean mummie, No crisps/biscuits or cakes. We did bake cookies last week, once in a while though is ok by me. Trying to control their diets at the moment. They have been used to, too many biscuits & chocolat in the orphanage for the last six months.
I don't think its mean at all Sue.I really think more people should be like that. These foods are an occasional treat, not an everyday staple.....Im sure its fun in the kitchen with the kids, doing some cookies etc, just not everyday.I don't have anything like that in the house as a standard thing. Occasionally Marc will pick up a pack of biscuits when we shop, but its only every few months or so.The kids will appreciate these things more if they are used as a treat instead.xxx
Totally agree with James, you're doing the right thing. Mine didn't know what sweets or chocolate were until going to nursery and didn't regard such things as "normal". Advantage of not having telly, I feel.
