Christmas Food Shopping

At this time of year I'm always wondering when to do the last-minute supermarket shopping for sprouts and salady things. I don't like to do it too far ahead but don't want to be too late. Every year I vow not to panic and every year I do!

Mine's being delivered by Tescos between 10 and 11 pm on the 23rd :) I can't count the number of times I've revised the list, adding and taking away! My theory is - if they substitute something, or it's out of stock, then I still have the 24th, and can go out and get whatever is missing. Hopefully, it won't be the turkey!

I can say ditto to everything Darkginger said, except Waitrose will be delivering. Last year I WAS nervous that everything would turn up and thought there would be substitutes (and I'd be hoovering up on Christmas Eve), but I was dumbfounded when they got it right 100% (better than a normal week!).

I think it helps them if you start your order early (I know that they look to see what they might need to order). I asked Customer Services how it works if you want to buy something from their Entertaining range and they said they are made to order and sent to your local store to be delivered with your order and that you have (in my case she looked it up for me) a 5 day shelf life. I thought that very useful.

I said to the delivery chap last year that I was so impressed and he said they just order in soooo much of everything. It occurred to me... I wondered how much food is wasted?... But perhaps they reduce everything late on Christmas Eve? I hate to think of good food going to waste when there are places like Crisis at Christmas looking after people who have nothing to put in their tummies.

I did the non-perishable stuff last Thurs and am going tomorrow for the fresh stuff. I hate the scrum and although I have made a list (and checked it twice) I know I will forget something
