Christmas Cake

Help please!! Have decided to make Jamie Oliver's Christmas Cake this year. The problem is I am unsure of soaking fruits in 400 ml. of alcohol as required. Recipe says to bring fruits to a simmer in the alcohol then take off heat and leave for about 24 hours. All ok apart from the amount of 400 ml? The most I think I have ever used before would be about 165 ml. I am wondering if the fact it is all brought to a simmer first just results in a nice moist, but not overly so, cake. Really do need some input to this before starting. Thanks :-)
