Heston's out

I see from today's paper that Heston has been dropped by Little Chef. I'm not surprised, really. Novel food is to the all day breakfast as polo is to rounders. Besides, in recent years I've found that LCs can't even do a decent fresh fry-up.

On a long car journey I often hanker for the good old 'Early Starter' with coffee, OJ, toast and a complimentary newspaper.

Does anyone else have good (or bad) memories of Little Chef or any other UK national roadside eateries?

Heston & LIttle Chef

When I was a kid, we used to eat at Little Chef fairly often, after garden centre etc. visits on a Sunday. The only thing I can remember liking is their pancakes with chocolate sauce and cream. I might possibly have ventured into one to try Heston's stuff, but having seen what they're replacing his items with, no way! It's all unhealthy stodge, and not even of the genuine truck stop quality - insipid tea, rather than 'stand a spoon in it' builder's tea, plus their chips are extruded spudcrud, rather than real cut potatoes. I don't think the failure was Heston's food, I think it was their failure to promote it, or indeed themselves, as anything but lowest possible quality food made with cheap ingredients. Not for me - give me a proper down to earth independent 'caff' any time!
