Venison steaks

What would be complementary side dishes to serve with venison steaks?

Venison steaks

I like to serve mushrooms with mine - preferably a wild mushroom mix, nice and earthy, just sweated down in some butter and maybe garlic. Venison can stand up to some strong flavours, maybe mashed spuds with kale? Brussels sprouts with bacon lardons is another possibility, or how about a creamy potatoes Dauphinoise (the only issue with this is that if you serve your venison on the rare side, the bloody juices may meld with the Dauphinoise and make a pink mess on the plates!)? I would say red cabbage, but it's not really something I'm fond of, although you may like it, and I've seen it on menus with venison.

Hope that helps a bit!

That's great, I have some red cabbage in the freezer, so will try the mushrooms also. Thanks a million

to go with venison steaks

Along with what darkginger suggests, while the steaks are resting I make a red wine sauce incorporating the juices running out of the resting steaks.

Venison and...

Potato and celeriac mash is lovely with venison.

Baby onions would be good, with kale and buttery carrots.
