Horse meat in burgers..

What do you think? If I had eaten one (not that I ever would), and enjoyed it, then I'd say no problem!

Horse meat in burgers..

I wouldn't eat horse from choice but I think I did eat it in France a long time ago. I ordered a Steak and it was very good but afterwards a French friend said it was horse. I've never ordered a Steak since whenever I've been visiting France.

Horse meat in burgers .....

I couldn't agree ...... LESS! The fact it is horse meat is almost irrelevant compared to the issues of deceiving customers, false labeeling and the huge issues with the integrity of the supply chains of the retailers implicated - if they can't get this right, what about the rest of their food?

Horse meat

Totally agree with Pan.
It's the wider implications surely ?

Horse Meat in burgers.

I also agree that its the wider implications.

I've no problem with eating horse meat, I have done so and it was fine, but if it says beef on the packet it should be beef inside the packet.

Burgers

We may find eating horsemeat distasteful but worse was the presence of pork in some of the burgers. That is absolutely forbidden for many people.

Burgers

Personally, I never trust the content of burgers or sausages, would never, ever buy them from a supermarket whether they were value or more upmarket ranges.

Horse meat

To me, it would be like someone putting cat or dog in front of me to eat. Know what I mean? If I found out that I'd been eating it, I would feel quite ill, purely because of my love for horses.
There again, I've never bought a burger in my life - always make my own. One could say, how do we know that the beef we buy is actually beef????

Agree, Noreen; make own sausages and mince piece of steak for burgers.
What else might be in junk burgers: cat brains, TVP, whatever?

I wouldn't eat one, it might give you the gallops.

FAO Gerry

Slightly off topic but Gerry you say you make your own sausages. I have recently bought some shoulder of pork to make some too but it needs mincing and I don't have a mincer! Can I use my food processor do you think? Any tips would be welcome.
Re the horse burgers, I have eaten horse in Italy no problem and our French neighbour eats horse every Friday. What concerns me more is the fact that there could be pork included which for many people, either for religious purposes or health reasons, is forbidden.

FAO Tubs

I don't have a food processor but I assume it minces fine. I use an electric mincer. I'll look up the recipe I used when last making sausages and post it later. Remember that all the ingredients should be kept very cold; return the stuff to the fridge in between stages.
BTW I have an unwanted hand mincer which you could have (free) if you live near us (Mid-Devon).

PS Tubs

Sausages
1lb venison
1lb 4oz belly pork
2 medium onions
4oz dried apricots
Mince above, return to fridge.
1tsp salt (probably more, to taste)
1tsp black pepper
Saltspoon white pepper, sage and thyme
1tbs dijon mustard, anchovy sauce, chilled white wine
Get sausages mix from fridge, add seasonings and mix well by hand.
Fry a small piece and taste for seasoning.
Now you'll need to put the mix through the machine again, not mincing
but stuffing into sausage skins.
Alternatively, you could form into patties or skinless sausages.
Dry out well before freezing.
The ingredients can be varied but this is the most recent I did.
