Shepherds Pie is made with lamb and cottage pie with beef.

shepherd vs cottage pie

Shepherd's with lamb or mutton (ie sheep); cottage with beef.

Shepherds pie.

As said above, one is lamb, one beef, however, in my family we always call it Shepherds Pie, wrongly, but we do. I've never eaten one made with lamb, mainly because I consider lamb to be totally inedible so I sometimes use beef, and sometimes Quorn or soya instead. We still call it shepherds pie though! :)

One of my fave meals!

I've never called it cottage pie even though I make it with beef. It's always a shepherds pie. I like them but my OH doesn't but I still make them now and again.

It's always shepherds pie here too, whether lamb, pork, beef or veggie.

It's funny but it's shepherds pie here too regardless of what it's made with!

Cottage Pie

Just logged on whilst meat is simmering for cottage pie tonight.
It's always a fave once the temperature really drops. Total comfort food !

Shepherd's cottage.

If you want to be really pedantic, Shepherd's pie has a mash topping and is made with sheep, Cottage pie is topped with sliced potato (to resemble tiles)and, if you don't use par-cooked potatoes, takes a month of Sundays to cook.

Never seen that!

I've never seen a Cottage Pie recipe that suggests sliced potato as a topping, although I have made one cos I had left overs.

Gotta be mash for me!! :)

Shepherds/Cottage Pie

Kayb, I've not heard of it done that way either, but now you've got me hankering after a minced beef cobbler!

Same here, always beef, always mash, always called it Shepherd's Pie! I think it was called Cottage Pie at school and it was disgusting so Cottage Pie has no positive connotations for me!
