Asparagus

I thought we were now in Asparagus season, in the UK? or am i wrong or has it been delayed cos of the awful weather?

I had seen a lovely recipe, which i wanted to make, so off i went to tesco, they had 2 packs of asparagus, one pack was from chile, and their "finest" was from argentina.

I refuse to buy something as delicious as asparagus when in season from a different country.

Don't worry. Tesco in Cardigan had asparagus tips from Herefordshire on Saturday. Delicious! They also had stuff from Peru. Shame on them! Shame on them!

Only ever buy it when in season and grown in the UK - so far have had but one tasting !

I also get annoyed when I see piles of the stuff from Peru - it ain't the same - simple as.

I've seen UK stuff about, Sammy.

Yes, it started a bit earlier here in Lincolnshire apparently because of the good weather in March.
The local farm shops have had it for about two weeks now.
One of the nicer things about living here is that you can buy Asparagus which has been picked that morning.x

Did a nice new recipe yesterday with asparagus.

Take 500g asparagus ,divide into 6 bundles and wrap each bundle in 2 slices of Parma ham or pancetta.put in roasting tray. Drizzle with olive oil, season and rip over some thyme. Bake 10-12mins.
Make a dressing: whizz 1 tabsp runny honey, 1 1/2 teaspoon English mustard, 1 small shallot,15g toasted pine nuts,25gr soft cheese (or goats cheese if you like, I don't!) juice of 1/2 lemon and 70ml oil until smooth.season. Add a little water if too thick. Put in pan and warm through. Serve each bundle on toasted soda bread drizzled with dressing, and garnish with thyme. Enjoy.

I have seen English asparagus at the farm shop but I suspect it might have been grown in tunnels. Mine is still a long way off being ready to be harvested. The dry start to the year has delayed it, but the recent rain will have helped enormously.

Yes, still from Peru or Mexico here. Our asparagus season is usually a tad slower than the UK's but it should be starting soon.

There is nothing like fresh local spring asparagus, whether in the UK or Canada. Love it!

third picking tomorrrow from the garden. Worth the wait each year. Have been very careful not to cut too much and I think we are now being rewarded. A very cold winter has not held it back. Huge surprise for me. Lost so many other plants, the bay trees, rosemary, so sad :(0
