Butchery Counter in Sainsburys

Whole legs of lamb have recently been on half price offer in Sainsburys in the meat aisle, but none on the butchery counter at my local store. I asked the butcher if he would bone it for me which he was happy to do. However one of his managers was rather cross about it stating that the meat could become cross contaminated! I find this rather odd, beause if that is the case then so could any other meat on the butchery counter.

I was very grateful to the butcher as boning a leg of lamb takes me about 20 minutes; my knives and skills are not as sharp as his. He was happy to provide this service and has said he willdo this for anyone that asks. I made a point of thanking the butcher at customer services and pointing out that I would not have bought the lamb had it not been boned for me.

Does anyone here have any supermarket butchery experience that can explain why it would have been an issue?

Butcher

"Theoretically" I'd have thought that what goes into the aisles comes from the butchery counter/store cold storage anyway but that's likely not the case. Maybe the manager hasn't been through enough training as Sainsbury's ads (like a lot of other supermarkets) always tell us that their trained butcher/
fishmonger will be happy to bone or fillet for the customer. Message to manager from Head Office perhaps?

Hi Saffy, i know in France they won't mince lamb. We were doing a large party and needed mince lamb for one recipe, our supplier said no, So we asked the village butcher at first it was no until we mentioned how much we wanted, then he was quite happy about mincing even though he then had to clean the mince machine before he could use it again. He told us it was due to cross contamination.

You don't even see mince lamb here.

in store butchery

sounds rather peculiar - especially in a large operation such as sainsbugs/tesco and the like - surely in my minds eye - if the store is large enough to have a butchers then they could have seperate areas - or at the very least chopping boards dealing with lamb/beef/pork and poultry? the butchers i have had cause to deal with in stores wear those blue gloves aswell.

but i am so glad to here you happened across the nice butcher and the manager in the first place.

possibly - the butcher you came across may have owned or worked in a butcher shop prior to sainsbugs, hence his readiness to assist you in your requirements.?

Don't believe

Those Sainsbury managers are on a completely different agenda from the fairytale one on TV.

I'm constantly complaining about the rotting fruit and vegetables they sell. Our local manager keeps telling me that he has to sell what he's sent. I keep telling him he's going to kill someone infirm. He says there's nothing he can do (not "I'm sorry" or "I'll manage the problem").

Were you charged for the bone?

Boned lamb

Good point Chazza. If I had paid for a bone I would take it home to use as stock or something.

Fruit and vegetables

I could not agree more, Chazza about the fruit and vegetables in Sainsburys. I too have complained and have been met with the same indifference. I always vow never to go to our local branch again. However, it is a large branch and I can nearly always get everything else I want. There is free parking and lots of other shops nearby.

Butchery of community by Sainsburys

Sadly our Sainsburys, built on what was the local playing field, systematically put out of business 3 greengrocers, 2 butchers, 2 bakeries, a dairy, a fishmonger, a delicatessen and a small co-op, all within sight of each other.

Then they raised the prices and dropped the quality. Now you can see rats in daylight, so you know not to eat those grapes without washing them.

You would pay for the bone though. Its weighed and priced up then boned on request, they should ask if you want to keep the bone.
Its daft the Sainsbury manager saying that about CC., if it's a butchery area it wouldnt be an uncommon to request to bone out a joint, he has to chop off meat there surely for customers requirement. Would of niggled me lol....foodie.

KFC Mc D

You are so wrong. Just because you work in a fast food establishment it doesn't mean you are greedy enough to constantly eat it.I never notice particularly obese people working there.
I enjoy both fast foods occasionally and am not overweight.
It is and always has been something we have as a treat.
I also dine in lovely restaurants occasionally, again as a treat. I enjoy both in an entirely different way. It is snobby and ignorant to blame fast food for over weight.
Mainly it is lack of exercise and eating badly, but you can eat badly anywhere including at home.

Obesity and fast foods

"

I think this is the clue, LC. You are smart enough to keep it as an occasional indulgence, which is fine for all of us. Unfortunately though, for many people - especially in North America - it is far cheaper to eat fat-loaded, sodium-loaded meals in fast food chains than it is to eat healthily at home. Thus the hoards on this side of the pond who make it an almost daily habit and have the weight and ill health to show for it.

Check the nutritional boards of many of these ff establishments and you can see why. A greek salad at one of these chains whops a massive 1,960 count of sodium!! The calorie and fat count of many of the items is close to the recommended daily allowance in a single meal. This isn't healthy on a regular basis, no matter how much any of us may enjoy the occasional treat.

I agree that lack of exercise is a major contributor to obesity, but I also believe that fast foods and processed foods are an equal partner. It's shocking to see the amount that kids are given over here every week.

Thanks for your replies - very interesting. And yes, I did get the bone - think Sonny would never have forgiven me if I'd left it at the supermarket!
