Fondant covered carrot cake

I've been asked to make a wedding cake for friends with one of the tiers being a carrot cake. I remember chatting to a lady a few years ago who used to run a wedding cake business and she mentioned that you have to be careful covering carrot cakes with fondant as they can swell, damaging the fondant and additional decorations. She recommended leaving air holes to avoid swelling and cracking. I've tried googling this but can't find any examples of it happening to others. Does anyone have any experience of this or words of advice? Thanks!
