Pearl Onions

Hi all, I find it practically impossible to get pearl onions where I live, and it is impractical to grow them.
Would it be O.K. to substitute large (or giant) spring onions for them; I want to use them in a recipe similar to coq au vin. So buying a jar of silverskin cocktail onions and rinsing them isn't really an option.

Onions

Why not shallots? They come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Pearl onions

Shallots would be good, but if I couldn't get exactly what I wanted & there was no obvious substitute on sale, I think I would try the large spring onions - I imagine they will need less cooking time before they fall apart though (thinking of the texture of them being looser/younger to begin with?), so it might require some recipe adjustment perhaps?

Pearl onions

Karen, Here too it is not so easy to find them but I am able to buy frozen ones in 1lb bags. Saves much peeling, being able to throw them straight into my beef bourguignon. I don't know where you are but maybe you are able to find them frozen?
