Delia turkey roasting time query

Hi

Im cooking christmas dinner for the first time this year. I was really pleased to find Delia's 'Talking Turkey' article with "foolproof advice" for timings on cooking the turkey. However, following the advice for a 12-14lb turkey, after cooking at a high heat for 40 minutes we are advised to cook it for 3-31/2 hrs.

How do we decide where between 3 and 3 1/2 hours is enough time? it would be really useful to get some further advice on that please. Its clearly not at the last stage where you can tell if its cooked by testing the juices so how will i know if 3 hrs or 3 1/2 hrs is enough at the second stage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

For Estim8

Hello Estim8,

It depends on the size of the turkey. So if it’s a 12lb turkey it will be 3 hours and if its 14lb it will be 3 1 / 2.

The following recipe explains the last 30 minutes of cooking and the basting time too.

Good luck cooking your first Christmas lunch.

Merry Christmas

Thank you!

Lindsay, thats great. Yes of course it makes sense now, 3hrs for 12lb, 3 1/4 hrs for 13lb, 3 1/2 hrs for 14lb. Should have realised!

Thanks again for your common sense:)
