Boiled Eggs

I don't understand why it takes nearly twice as long to cook a soft boiled egg when eggs are put in boiling water from the start as opposed to putting them in cold water to start.

See: http://www.deliaonline.com/how-to-cook/eggs/how-to-boil-an-egg.html

Looking forward to reasoning

Thank you

If you read it again, you will see that with the first method the pan is taken completely off the heat source and the eggs left to carry on cool with the residual heat of the water.
The second method the water has to come to boiling point first (with the eggs in it) and then reduced to a gentle simmer, but carries on in this simmering water for a shorter timed number of minutes ....
overall I expect that the timings will be similar taking into avcount that the water has to boil first anyway .

sorry for the typo ~ that should read cook, not "cool" on the first method.
