Crumbly sponge

I think I followed the recipe for the coffee and walnut cake to the letter but when I turned the sponges out they were very crumbly and fell apart, very annoying when you look at all the washing up, where did I go wrong?

Crumbly sponge

It could be that your eggs were not large enough. Often when I buy a box of large eggs they look a bit small so at home I always pick out the largest ones for my cakes. I even check them in the boxes in the shops as they can weigh from 63 - 73g and and if they look a bit on the small side sometimes I buy extra large eggs as they weigh from 73g.
