Ideas to serve with red wine cake

I have made a chocolate & red wine cake to take to friends. They often get the short straw when I am trying a new pudding recipe & this is no exception. (I made a mini portion to taste, & it actually tastes like mulled wine cake, if I'm honest - it has cinammon & ground cloves in it.)

Cake is baked & then soaked with a red wine syrup. It has a glaze of redcurrent jelly and dark chocolate discs round the sides. I have also added a few redcurrant jelly glazed Scottish raspberries (that I froze when in season).

But I really need some ideas for what to serve with it & am now rather stumped. Recipe suggests sorbet, but that isn't an option with a car journey!

I have more frozen raspberies so could do a coulis? Or just serve with creme fraiche? Can anyone suggest anything better?

Red wine cake

I've been thinking about a Creme Anglais, quite runny as against custard. Well, I like my custard thick, but I think Creme Fraiche would be good, or going totally OTT on the calorie and fat count how about some wonderful clotted cream xx

red wine cake

I went with creme fraiche in the end, but clotted cream would be an excellent partner for it, Biggles! The cake was a bit like eating the bottom of a sherry trifle, only different. But it wasn't at all sickly, so I think it could take a nice rich cream rather well. I also will be adjusting the recipe a bit - it needs more cocoa I think & maybe some nutmeg.

Red Wine cake

Sounds an interesting recipe, I might have to try it and get my brother to send me some Cornish clotted cream. Glad it went well.
