Braised Red Cabbage

Friends visiting from France tomorrow and we have a beautiful rib of beef and I wanted to do some Braised Red Cabbage as one of the veg.....but I forgot the apples :(

I do have some dates and sultanas, do you think I could add some of those instead for the sweetness ?

Help would be appreciated thanks

I realise it's too late to save the day, but you could simply have added honey, or sugar or even used apple juice as cooking liquid. I don't use Delia's recipe but mine uses sugar, although I add honey to my taste.

Do you have cider vinegar? I add vinegar in my dish. Apart from apple, I also use sultanas/raisins. I like the sharpness of the vinegar - it makes a difference.

A good slurp of red wine and not much else goes in as liquid to my braised cabbage. helps keep the colour too.Sultanas sounds good. Going to try that.

Thanks for your replies, in the end I used sultanas and cranberries. The cranberries were dried so I used less brown sugar, a dash of red wine and balsamic vinegar went in too, It was lovely....very Christmassy will defo do it this way again .
