Chocolate icing

I need to chocolate ice a cake. The icing needs to be firm, as I need to add ribbon and marzipan flowers, but not as firm as royal icing. The only recipe I have found so far is a type of fudge icing but that requires raw egg and as a number of people eating it are elderly that is out!

Chocolate icing

Can you just use melted chocolate with the addition of a little flavourless oil to add a sheen?

I also know that Regal Ice do make a fondant icing that is chocolate flavour. I just googled & cakecraftstore.co.uk seem to sell it.

Chocolate icing

Have you thought of making a chocolate ganache and pouring it over the cake, it will set up firm. You can also chill the ganache in a 'fridge overnight and whip it the next day. After you spread it over the cake it will firm up. To make ganache, chop 1lb. cooking chocolate or use chocolate chips ( depends which side of the pond you are on). Bring 1 pint (USA 16oz) of heavy cream to a boil and pour over the chocolate. Stir until the chocolate has melted. Use however you wish, liquid to pour over the cake or whip the next day and spread it over.
