I'm organising a party for December for 40 people. Can anyone suggest what I can cook - that I don't need to worry about on the night - and I don't want to have a steamy face!

Buffet I presume?

I'd do a huge cheese & potato gratin and/or cooked/cut/scooped/filled jacket potatoes, and serve a selection of cold cuts to go with it - whatever you fancy. I like to have smoked salmon available or a whole cold poached salmon & various salad options of choice (no hot face there) & often serve a cold bowl of dressed cous cous with lots of additions like pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, peppers, fresh herbs etc, & a few bowls of dips & crudites, a mixed selection of breads & a cheeseboard & crackers with grapes, nuts & celery, pickles, etc.

For puds I like to do Delia's truffle torte, a lemon tart, a trifle maybe & you're bound to have mince pies & cake & sweeties for the kids.

You'll be knackered - have fun!
