Fruit Cake Advice

Hi I have made Delias fruit cake a few times and when I have gone to treat them with Brandy, half of them are cracked down the middle, a friend suggested 'glueing' them together with Apricot jam which worked quite well but I want to avoid having to do that in the first place! I keep the cakes wrapped in the original baking paper then cover it with foil and treat every fortnight! They are kept in my mams utility room which is cold all of the time! The cakes are 12" so I tend to make the mixture two and half times to get the right size. Please can you tell me where I am going wrong and how to prevent it from crumbling to pieces?
