Queen of puddings

I followed Delia's recipe today and although it was delicious I was very disappointed because after I took my pudding out of the oven, the beautiful meringue topping deflated before my eyes from about 3 or 4 cm high until it was only about 1cm deep - aargh! What did I do wrong?? Did I overbeat/underbeat the egg whites? Did I over or under cook it?? It looked fabulous when I lifted it out but was very sad looking by the time it had finished deflating!
