Cleaning unglazed pottery

Does anyone know a good way to bring an unglazed piece of pottery back to looking clean? Any ideas welcome.

if its an unglazed ceramic cookware item?

once the dish has cooled down completely - put in the sink with warm water (elbow warm) with a tablepsoon of bi card soda, leave to soak for a few mins, maybe 20 mins for a "big cook up" - if stubborn stains scrub it gently with non metal scourer - then rinse off with clean water. allow to air dry.

if its an ornament - dust it with paint brush - if stubborn stained - use a clean soft cloth dabbed in warm water - don't soak it.

Cleaning unglazed pottery

Thanks for that Sam. It is a fish shaped small dish which is very pretty and was my brothers'.Unfortunately he had a party at one time and someone stubbed a cigarette in it using it as an ashtray which has made a nasty black mark in it.
Recently my brother died and when I was clearing his things I came across this dish and it reminds me of him so I would like to put it out but we don't smoke and it is far too nice to use as an ashtray anyway but the black mark on it spoils it so I was hoping there might be some way of removing the stain.x

Try a little soda bic on a toothbrush, then rinse off with warm water and dry.

Unglazed pottery

I trained in museum work and this is a major headache for conservators. I've found that soaking is the best thing. You may need to fill the vessel with water and just leave it to stand while the water soaks through the wall of the vessel. If in doubt ask a local museum that has ceramics.
