Cats again. Sorry!

One of my much-loved cats died suddenly this morning. He was perfectly alright yesterday, eating and drinking as normal, no D&V. There is no chance of a post-mortem & I'm a bit worried about what he could've died of as we have 4 other cats. There were no injuries and he had not eaten anything poisonous. He wasn't old about 6 years of age. The vet thought it was strange but offered no thoughts as to cause. Does anyone know the most common reason for a sudden death in cats?

Can anyone help me?

I am so sorry to hear about your beloved cat. I've never had a cat that dies suddenly. Is it possible that s/he had a stroke or do cats have heart attacks like humans.
RIP Puss.

Violet Eyes

Thanks. Oscar was a rescue cat & only had one eye due to being knocked down by a car. I thought that maybe he had suffered a brain injury that was not noticed at the time and that he had died of a stroke. I'm really hoping someone can shed some light.

He is buried under an orange tree.

Hope your boy is safe and well

Are you certain he was only 6 years old? If you got him as an adult cat from the rescue centre, it's possible they could have misjudged his age, and he was in fact a lot older, and died of natural causes?

My boy is fine, thankyou for asking. Poor Oscar, I know it's still painful for you but at least it was quick for him but so very sad for you and your OH. Hope your other cats are ok. Being laid to rest under an orange tree is nice, I know it's not the right word but you know what I mean. At least he's still with you.

Sorry x

So sorry to hear of the sudden death of your cat. It is really hard when a beloved pet dies and especially hard when it was so sudden x

My cat, Oscar

To you all. Thank you for your kind words.

Darkginger. They don't have rescue centres as such here, it was the vet who said he was about 4-years-old then. Oscar had been taken there after his accident.

It was something about his position on the ground he wasn't curled up as if asleep but stretched out as if basking in the sun which all of them do. It was as if he had just fallen over onto his side.

Thanks for taking time to offer the suggestion and of course to all of you for caring.

Violet Eyes re Oscar

He did like to lie under the fruit trees so as you say it is nice for him to be there. Unfortunately the garden is beginning to resemble a cemetery with two dogs and five cats now. Good to hear your boy is fit and well, what is his name?

Cats again

Hi Wendy, sorry to hear about your cat, I know it is so sad when an animal you love dies especially if it is sudden.
I had a cat many years ago now that died in just the same way and at the time the vet said it was a heart attack and that she was probably born with a heart defect just the same as humans can.
At least you can take comfort in knowing that your beloved cat had a lovely life while with you, and if he did die of a heart attack at least he wouldn't have felt anything. x

Thank you Linzechris

Thank you Linzechris for writing and your sympathy. It's very kind of you. I don't think Oscar had a heart problem as he was throughly investigated after his accident but it's good to have that knowledge for reference.

Expat Badger re cat

Thank you very much for taking time to send a few words to me. Oscar liked to lie under any of the fruit trees. He only had one eye and the dappled light they offered wasn't too much strain on his eye as he was almost blind because the pupil was fixed and dilated all the time.

Sorry I should have replied sooner. My cat is called Blackie, it's the name he had when we got him from the rescue centre so we couldn't change it.
Hope you are ok :o)

No need to apoogize.

My condolences Wendy. RIP Oscar.

How good of you to give him a loving home after his accident. It must have been a terrible shock. I hope the other four cats are being supportive.

Cats

So sorry to hear about Oscar, Wendy. I remember when our old cat died we were really sad - she was 19 and we'd had her all those years. A real member of the family - she lived with us longer than our son did!!

Can't help with possible cause of death but a stroke seems a likely one. At least it was quick. His resting place sounds lovely.
