Swede - still hard after 30 minutes

Does anyone have problems cooking swede? I have used it for many years but the last few years have had trouble getting it to cook down sufficiently to mash it. I cut it into half inch cubes and steam or boil for 20 minutes but it still stays whole and defies the potato masher and the hand whisk. Any ideas? Is this a new variety that the growers have developed to keep longer?

I've given up trying to mash swede, I can never get it lumpfree! Now I only ever roast it in the oven!

am glad you asked this question.

i have given up with swede for mashing, i just add to stews now. I also find them very tasteless, not at all swedey like thye used to - almost creamy.

I know they where best after the first frosts had gotten to them - but what the reason is for the recent bad ones i don;t know.

I gave up with Swede because its tough to cut when raw. I use turnips now and I find they are far tastier anyway.

smash not mash

we had smashed swede, carrot and potato last night

so lightly mashed, keeping lots of lumps - on purpose. With lots of butter and black pepper too

i don't think i would try and get it smooth...doubt i could manage it

I've had problems mashing swede (with or without carrots) to a smooth 'puree' so last week tried my stick blender. It worked very well and I then just steam dried it on a low heat afterwards and added butter and black pepper. It was good!

Lucky Swede

Well he was until people got jealous and started threatening to chop him up and put him in stews
