The Group

I know I'm way behind the curve, what with this first being published in 1963, and then released 2009, but having just finished 'The Group' by Mary McCarthy, all I can say is what an amazing book!

The plot follows a group of Vassar girls (US students) after their graduation, and discusses issues which are still relevant to young women today in a very modern manner.

I loved this book as not only was the plot believable and engrossing, I felt I was learning too. My vocab is pretty good, but at times I needed a dictionary! In a good way though, as it wasn't hard going or one of those books that you feel you have to read as to do so would be 'good for you'.

Any one else on here read it?

The Group

I read it back in the 60's but don't really remember much about it. You've made me want to go back and re-read it!!
I didn't know it had been released again, so thanks for that.

I think the re-release had something to do with Candace Bushnell, as she has written an introduction. The reviews also refer to it as the original 'Sex in the City', and considering it was set in the 1930s the issues are surprisingly similar.

I recall enjoying it decades ago; must re-read.

OMG this takes me back - when I did my GCE's in the 60's we were allowed to pick a book prize for speech night if we got a Grade A & I picked "The Group" & was really looking forward to reading it. Speech night duly arrived - I went up to collect my prize & the nuns obviously hadn't approved of my choice & had swapped it for "The letters of Pope Paul" or somesuch! Gutted!!! - never did get to read it - I really must get it out of the library & read it - thanks for jogging my memory - even if it is 40-odd years later.

Christine - that's hilarious! I've also got a few 'prize day' books hidden away somewhere that are so utterly boring I have never read them. All very suitable though :)

The film

Recently saw (again) the filmed version of The Group with, mainly, Candice Bergen. Made in 1966, didn't find it at all dated.
Was a really great read. If you liked that, then you'll love this -to quote the Bookshow slogan - Try 'Marjorie Morningstar', another great read in, lets say, a similar genre - and a great film too - Natalie Wood and Gene Kelly if I remembered that correctly.

"Any one else on here read it? "
..................
We all read it as students in 1968. We thought it very fast and ourselves very grown up and sophisticated for reading a book we imagined our mothers would be shocked about.

What goes round comes round.
