The Blasphemer

by Nigel Farndale. My cousin recommended this to me and I'm pleased she did. It alternates between WWI and the present day. I'm still reading it but it's very well written and thought provoking. When I first started it I thought it was going to be one of those "oh dear, why did I buy this" but it didn't take me too long to get into it and I'm glad I persevered.

I enjoyed it, too. You might like Alone in Berlin by Fallada. It's based on a true story of a simple, elderly couple who try to defy Hitler.
